The Opti-Kat 2002 Optimising Cross-cut Saw purchased with the aid of Australian Government Regional Partnerships funding was officially commissioned on June 22nd at our 40th anniversary celebrations (it was actually our 41st birthday, but we held off until the new machinery was up & running). Many past employees and board members took the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and to check out the many changes to our operation.
The hoped for increase in efficiency has bettered our expectations with a five-fold increase in production. It has also enabled us to employ another six people with disabilities, in fact, apart from our production manager setting up the computer each day, the machinery is operated entirely by our disabled employees.
This project has been initiated and encouraged by the timber industry as it will increase industry efficiency, save currently wasted timber and generate new jobs for people with and without disabilities.

The Mount Gambier Sheltered Workshop – to be known as Heritage Industries – is now in operation.
The first job being undertaken is in the form of scrap metal work.
As can be seen by viewing this website, Heritage Industries has become a major employer in the timber industry and is currently investigating further diversification to ensure long term sustainability and work for its loyal workforce.
